Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating):WHAT IS HYPERHIDROSIS?Hyperhidrosis is the medical name given to the condition of excessive sweating. It is a common medical problem affecting up to 3% of the population. It is seen in both men and women equally and usually begins whether as a child or an adolescent. It can involve the underarms, palms, feet and/or the face and forehead. You can have one area affected or a combination of the above. The cause is unknown. Sweating is controlled by our brain and likely the glands are over stimulated in some way resulting in too much sweating. It is common to run in families; up to two thirds of people have someone in their immediate family that is also affected. Impact on lifeMany studies have been done to show that Hyperhidrosis has a major impact on the lives of those that suffer with it. Up to 70% of people with Hyperhidrosis feel emotionally impaired by their sweating, 80% feel that it negatively impacts their work and almost as many feel that it affects their social interactions with others, even friends and family. BOTOX (Botulinum A) InjectionsBotox is one of the biggest advances in the treatment of Hyperhidrosis in years. With a simple treatment of Botox, sweating in that area can stop. When Botox is placed near the sweat glands the signal to sweat is stopped. It can take a few days or more to work but the results are dramatic. On average, there is over 80% decrease of sweat production in that area that lasts on average 7 months. Up to a third of patients can go 1 year before they return for more. Therefore, you are treated once or maximally twice per year and don't have to worry about constantly treating the area. What areas can be treated with Botox?Underarms: The most common and easiest place to administer Botox. Often a simple solution is put on the skin to see the exact area a person sweats from and then Botox is injected with tiny needles just under the skin. Hands: Also works very well with Botox. Because the hands are a sensitive area it is common to have some topical anesthetic placed on the skin so that the injections are painless. Forehead: Botox is extremely affective on this area of sweating. Most sweating occurs near the hair line and drips down the face. With a few simple injections this often very visible area of sweating can be treated. Feet: Topical anesthetic is also used for treatment of the feet. Although many people have a high level of satisfaction with treatment of the feet it can sometimes not be as predictable as the hands and underarms as to the degree of treatment success. CostIf a doctor has diagnosed you with Hyperhidrosis, almost all private drug plans will cover the medication portion of the treatment. MedAesthetics can provide you with information to help you with reimbursement. There is a cost for the injection procedure, which may also be covered by your drug plan.
